Getting rid of gas bottles can be tricky. They shouldn’t be thrown in the bin with the rest of your waste as they contain pressurised gas, a potential fire hazard that could leak or explode.

If you’re using the gas commercially and have large numbers of gas bottles or gas cylinders to get rid of, you should contact your supplier, as they will most likely collect them for you.

Fortunately, most gas bottles can be recycled or refilled, and any company managing the disposal will ensure they’re processed responsibly. We’ll go over all of your options in this article so you know exactly what method is best for you.

Gas Bottle Refill

If you still need the bottle, and all you’re looking for is a refill, your best bet is to contact the supplier or retailer that sold you the gas bottle. Many of them will offer a refill service or, failing that; they should be able to point you in the right direction.

If you’ve got a Calor gas bottle that needs a refill, they’ve got a handy Calor refills and returns page where you find your nearest store.

Gas Bottle Recycling

There comes a time when the gas bottle will need to be recycled. They can typically be reused and refilled for many years, but recycling centres can repurpose the gas bottle or gas cylinder for you when that’s no longer possible.

Typically, the remaining gas will be extracted first, and the bottle can be broken down and reused. Either for parts on new bottles, such as the valve. Or they are simply broken down into waste metal which is reused for any number of products.

Some councils will provide a recycling service from home. Failing that, you’ll need to find the nearest recycling centre that can process your gas bottle, take a look at the gas bottles page on recyclenow.com.

Gas Bottle Disposal

Empty gas bottles or gas cylinders should never be thrown out. They can always be refilled or recycled, so you’ll need to get in touch with a business that offers a collection service or find a recycling centre and take it there yourself.

Can I Put Gas Bottles In A Skip?

We often get asked at Norris if we accept gas bottles and whether they can be thrown in a skip with the rest of your waste.

Gas bottles can be thrown in a skip with the rest of your waste for a small fee. During the checkout process, you can select the number of gas bottles or cylinders you want to dispose of, and we’ll collect them when we come to pick up your skip.

We ensure they’re reused or recycled, so you can rest assured they won’t end up in a landfill. If you’re curious about how we process and recycle waste, you can take a look at our where waste goes page for more detail.
